“It is so enjoyable being out in the middle of nowhere, waiting for the perfect moment to drop in at sunset, or camping out and riding a specific line at sunrise.”

Roland Morley Brown

Although he’s known for freestyle snowboarding, Roland Morley-Brown (RMB) has ventured into the new realm of multi-disciplinary missions. The rise of challenging conditions and a constant quest to create unique content, lead him down a path that couldn’t be further from the beaten track.

Chasing back-to-back seasons for well over 15 years, RMB makes no plans to slow down. Southern winters are spent in New Zealand and northern winters in Austria, with every moment in between spent plotting the next adventure (usually from a world-class surf break).

RMB’s approach to snowboarding creatively fuses his bread and butter with backcountry aspects of the sport that have found their way into his repertoire over the years. He’s always seeking out ways to add freestyle into the mix when riding big mountain lines after a rigorous hike or climb.

From heli-boarding big mountain lines in Alaska, to taking on the craziest man-powered approaches that are rewarded with steep descents; RMB is living proof that snowboarding is more than a sport; it’s an obsession that never ceases to push you to the limits.

As the longest standing snowboarder on the ANZ Athlete Team, RMB has a wealth of experience to pass down to the next generation of snowsports athletes. As well as naturally taking on a mentor role for his other teammates, in 2023 RMB contributed to The North Face Development Program in New Zealand.

“I feel inspired by the people in my community who are working to make climbing more inclusive and accessible. It can be really hard work, but I see the differences they’ve made, and it inspires me to keep working towards those goals too.”

“The mountains are really my happy place. When I am in the mountains all my other cares and worries seem to not matter and I feel completely relaxed. What excites me most about skiing is that there are no rules. There's no right and wrong way to ski down a mountain, you just do what feels best for you.”
