Duncan Brown

Duncan Brown Climber Athlete

Duncan wears many hats through his days - coach, gym owner, community organiser, events manager, volunteer, Rubik's cube dabbler, Star War Lego enthusiast, and of course climber, athlete, and adventurer.

Finding comfort and belonging in challenge and chaos, Duncan has pursued climbing and first ascents across most of Australia and Asia, calling China home for many years. Since returning home to Australia he has found much enjoyment in seeking challenge and a sense of adventure closer to his home in Canberra.

Duncan's true passion is for exploring the unknown and in climbing that means hiking through the hills discovering new crags and boulders and doing first ascents. This has led to him pursuing that exploration across the globe doing several thousand first ascents of boulders, sport routes, trad routes, aid routes, multi pitches and big walls across many countries and several continents.

Nowadays his attention is drawn towards combining disciplines from climbing to split boarding, pack rafting, trail running and more to create challenge and adventure in his own backyard and beyond.

Outside of his own pursuit of adventure and challenge, Duncan's passion is in improving opportunities for the next generation to be involved in sport and have the opportunity to seek their own adventures. He uses his base in Canberra and his gym, Mountain Strong, as a platform for doing the work to help his local, national and global communities strive towards more access to sport and adventure wherever and however he can.

Notable Achievements

  • Several thousand first ascents in every style, across the world
  • Sport Routes up to grades 30+
  • Trad Routes up to grades 28+
  • Boulders up to grades V10+
  • 5th free ascent of Ozymandias Original, Mount Buffalo, Australia

“I feel inspired by the people in my community who are working to make climbing more inclusive and accessible. It can be really hard work, but I see the differences they’ve made, and it inspires me to keep working towards those goals too.”

“The mountains are really my happy place. When I am in the mountains all my other cares and worries seem to not matter and I feel completely relaxed. What excites me most about skiing is that there are no rules. There's no right and wrong way to ski down a mountain, you just do what feels best for you.”
